Ancient Story about the Temple:
It was one heavy raining day. Sage Agathiya Muni, also famously known as Kurumuni made his Prayan to South Side to visit ancient Shiva temples. He crossed Kusasthalai River and supposedly to reach this place(Now its called Nabalur). But, due to the heavy storm he stays under one tree. He was waiting there for some long time. Under heavy lightening, Sage Agathiyar saw an old boy standing along with a small dog in a calling distance,so he tried to reach that boy but he ran fastly. Sage reached the place where the boy stopped and it's a big BILVA TREE there. To his Surprise, Sage Agasthiyar found a Shiv Lingam under that Bilva Tree. With his full devoted spirit he surrendered fully to the Shiva Deity and performed Shiva Pooja there itself. And one more to his surprise is, that day is PRADOSHAM. He is powerless to explain about the God's Grace. Thaanaga Vanthu Aatkonda Shivamey like that he made prayers. When he was not in a state to recognize himself where he is, he heard a laughing sound of a small boy. Suddenly he saw back, the same small boy with his dog was near to him. Sage identified him as Bairava Moorthy and he only provided Marga Dharshanam for his Shiva Pooja. So, with all his due powers, Sage shouted VATUKA! VATUKA!. The small boy made his Devoted Smile as the Anugraha and vanished.. Sri Agasthiyar then made Pradisthai of Lord Bairava in Vatuka Form inside the main temple itself.
